Ask Andy: Hotel savings

(WMC TV) - There's an app I swear by when I'm traveling and I can't plan ahead for a hotel:  Hotel Tonight.

The free app shows hotel deals in 100 cities worldwide. You can start checking rates at noon in any given hotel's time zone. It's very helpful in finding hotel deals fast, right where you are.

But when you can take your time and plan a good hotel deal, Hotel Tonight recommended this approach:

* LOVE THE OFF-SEASON.  Our sources at Hotel Tonight said hotels and resorts can be as much as 50 percent cheaper during off-seasons. Try the beach in the late fall or winter, for example.

* SEARCH FOR CONFLICTING EVENTS. Google your destination during the time you plan to travel to see if there's a convention, festival or sporting event that may spike hotel rates or steal available rooms, then make adjustments.

* THE DAY OF THE WEEK MATTERS. Hotel Tonight said usually, big cities are more expensive mid-week, while resort markets are more expensive on weekends. If you can be flexible, plan your stay around that philosophy.

Consumer Reports recommended taking advantage of hotels' best-rate guarantees. Book your stay, then keep looking online for a better deal. If you find one, take it back to your original booking and make them either match it or beat it.
