Longtime school employee loses job, struggles to find another in school system

(WMC-TV) - A woman who worked in the school system for years says she may out of a job as a result of low enrollment numbers.

Marilyn Davis' story is similar to many in the school system. She has been employed with Memphis City Schools and Shelby County Schools for 21 years and now she is waiting to see if she will be able to get another job.

Davis most recently ran the office at Craigmont High School, but the longtime assistant says she was told by school administration she was being let go because of low enrollment numbers at the school.

"I didn't understand that to lose a secretary because of a proposed enrollment of 60 students. That baffled me," she said.

Davis says she applied for eight new positions within the new system. She says she was denied opportunities to interview for any of them.

MCS says Davis, and others like her, signed a status change form, agreeing that their jobs would be cut. MCS also confirms that Davis applied for additional jobs at the central office and staff members have spoken with her.

"I feel like 21 years should be an example of my experience and my ability to perform a job," she said.

Davis says she is now playing the waiting game.

"I applied, still applying but I don't know which direction to travel from here."

Memphis City Schools says they are familiar with Marilyn Davis' case. She and others, they say, will be notified by July 1 whether they will have a new job in the unified school district.
