(WMC-TV) - Paychecks for all teachers in DeSoto County Schools are expected to be fatter, without making taxpayer pockets any lighter.

Onjaleis Harris is not shy about why she likes her former second grade teacher in DeSoto County.

"She's nice and she gives us lots of things like treats and things," said Harris, who is going to be in third grade next year.

This coming school year, it is the teachers who will be given the ‘treats'.

The school board plans to give each teacher $750 more to start making up for cuts made a few years ago.

"I have a sister who teaches middle school math here in Horn Lake," said Alma Straw.

It seems just about everybody knows a teacher in DeSoto County Schools. Christy Benson knows several through her five children.

"Elementary, Middle, High School, and two graduated at Horn Lake," said Benson.

Benson used to be a teacher and says the raise is long overdue. She was glad to learn the board says the bump will not raise her taxes, though she says she wouldn't mind because of all the work she knows they do.

"When you go home, you probably don't have a lot of paperwork to do, some people do, but teachers are grading papers all night, they're staying late for parent teacher conferences," said Benson.

The school district says the board plans to refinance several bonds to lower interest rates that will save more than $1 million to help fund the raises. That is even better news for Onjaleis's dad.

"That sounds great. That'll be more money in my pocket," said Oscar Quinn.

This may not be the only raise on the horizon for DeSoto County teachers. The board also would like add another $750 next year. They will vote on it in July.
