MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – The Memphis Grizzlies are getting ready for their first round of summer midnight basketball tournaments, which actually start at 7 o'clock.

Action News 5's Justin Hanson was just one of hundreds of Mid-Southerners test driving seats at the FedExForum as the Grizzlies are preparing to sell out next year's basketball season.

They are also getting ready for a special event Saturday night that helps keep teens busy. FedEx Forum was buzzing Saturday but not with basketball.

Grizz fans were scouring the seats, looking for the best perch from which to watch the Grizzlies play next season.

Grizzlies fan, Shawn Newson says, "Seem like I'm loving it. I don't want to move really."

Newson says he could get used to court-side seats.

19-year-old Donquarious Roper also spent his morning looking for prime Grizz seats too, but he's spending his night at the Grizzlies Athletic Center playing in the first Grizzlies midnight basketball tournament.

Roper says, "Playing basketball and learning from other people as they play basketball and watching the Grizzlies play basketball. It's a good experience."

Eric Jackson and hundreds of his family members came out Saturday to pick their season seats at the Forum.

He too feels like the midnight tournaments are a way to keep teens out of trouble. The tournaments are part of a bigger effort to reduce crime among teens. That's why they're held during the high crime hours on Saturdays.

The games are part of a partnership among the Grizzlies, the Memphis Gun Down initiative, and the Memphis Police Department.
