Joerger to be named Grizzlies head coach

(WMC-TV) - It may have been the worst kept secret in coaching.  The Grizzlies will soon hire assistant coach Dave Joerger to take over the reigns of the Bluff City team.

The move is not an unexpected one.  Lionel Hollins' top assistant has been in the running for the head coaching job since the team made the decision not to renew Hollins the beginning of this month.

Joerger has been with the Grizzlies since the Marc Iavaroni days in 2007, even leading the Grizzlies summer league squad to a perfect 5-0 record in 2009.

Well-known as an up and comer in the coaching world, Joerger was one of the most successful coaches in the minor leagues, leading his teams to five titles.

He was also the architect of the Grizzlies defense that ranked second in the NBA last year.

According to the Commercial Appeal, Joerger's deal is for three years, averaging under $2 million per season.

The Grizzlies will formally introduce Joerger later this week.
