MPD director speaks out about budget cuts

(WMC-TV) - Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong is speaking out about what budget cuts will mean to the police department. He says a 2.5 percent reduction in his budget is not insignificant.

The primary concern for Armstrong, as it was for council members debating the operating budget Tuesday night, is the impact on police personnel. Specifically, so-called "boots on the ground."

Armstrong says he will go line item by line item to determine from where the reduction will be made.

"We'll have to get creative with some of things because we won't be able to hire at the rate we wanted to," said Director Armstrong. "Will have to tighten our belts and do everything we can to make this work."

Armstrong said claims by some on the council that the Memphis Police Department had a $3 million surplus were not entirely accurate since some expenditures were not yet reflected in the information they had.

He added that a big challenge is the number of retirees expected over the next few years and a desire to have officers on hand to replace those people.
