Grizzlies' fitness coordinators teach healthy lessons at kids' summer camp

(WMC-TV) - The Memphis Grizzlies' fitness coordinators worked out with kids from a catholic charity's camp.

Kids from Camp Love and Learn found out that simple exercises can have a big impact on their health.

"Well you have to exercise at least 30 minutes to one hour a day to stay health," said Joseph Oliva, who attended the camp.

That was just one of the lessons that were taught by Grizzlies Outreach Coordinator Daniel Peterson.

"We're trying to build habits in their kids when they are young so that whey they get older through teen years and as they become adults they are going to go back and keep those habits up," said Peterson.

In addition to fitness skills, campers also learned about nutrition and academics.

"So every child that's here gets basically an hour pretty much every day of mathematics enrichment, plus an hour of language arts enrichment," said Michael Allen, Catholic Charities of West Tennessee.

Camp counselors say the key to healthy kids is keeping them active,,, exercising their minds as well as their bodies...

Organizers say the goal is about more than developing active kids, its also about developing healthy families. That is why the kids are encouraged to take activities they learn at camp home with them to teach the rest of their family.

"That's important because once they get all hyped and excited here they are going to go home and tell mom," said Camp Love and Learn Director Virginia Davenport.
