Police: Man killed in gas station shooting

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said Dusty Smith was shot in the back inside of the Kangaroo store. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said Dusty Smith was shot in the back inside of the Kangaroo store.

(WMC-TV) - A man was shot inside of a Kangaroo gas station next to one of the only breakfast spots in Marks, Mississippi early Thursday morning. The McDonald's restaurant that shares the building tried to conduct business despite a murder investigation taking place at the neighboring, closed down store.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation said Dusty Smith was shot in the back inside of the Kangaroo store. He was able to drive his car off the scene toward the hospital, but then he died.

"The guy that [who was] killed ... [his] son was staying at our house and the mother called and telling us Dusty had got shot and killed," said resident Charlotte Still.

Several witnesses said Smith was in the store with one of his kids when he was shot.

Police placed one suspect, Roger Craig, in custody. Craig turned himself in to authorities.

Benjamin Raymond is friends with Smith, and said the two had been at odds.

"They've been going at it for a good while now, arguing back and forth every time they seen each other," he said.

The MBI is handling the case for Marks Police.

"It's so awful because I just lost a daughter 5 years ago and I know how it feels to lose somebody you love," said Still.
