(WMC-TV) - Millington is just one of the areas being looked at in the tri-county area as a possible location for a proposed veterans' home for West Tennessee. Organizers kicked off a campaign Monday to raise money to build it.

"The need is now, actually its overdue," said Holly Swogger, who is leading an effort to build the $60 million facility.

Organizers must have $23 million, or 35 percent of the cost raised by June 2015.

There are currently three parcels of land being looked at: two in Millington and one in Memphis.

One of the proposed sites sits next to Millington Elementary School.

"We have 33,000 vets over 65, there's a need right now. But also, we have a bunch just back from Iraq and Afghanistan," continued Swogger.

The new veterans' home would primarily serve Shelby County, Fayette County, and Tipton County. In those three counties alone, there are nearly 75,000 veterans. Two-thirds of those veterans over 65 will spend time in a nursing home.

The nearest veterans' home is 96 miles from Memphis in Humboldt, which lies in Gibson County. That home has 138 veterans on its waiting list to get in.

Holly Swogger says they will build the new home where there is a higher population of veterans.

"We have a high concentration in Whitehaven, Frayser, Raleigh, and Millington is a obvious place," Swogger explained.

Organizers say the new facility would employ more than 200 people and pour millions back in the local economy. Every dollar counts in the campaign. If you would like to donate to the fundraising efforts for the new veterans' home, mail a check to WTVH, P.O. Box 655, Cordova, TN 38088.
