MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - A doctor known for his exceptional work with premature and critically ill newborns has passed away.

Dr. Sheldbon Korones, who trained countless doctors how to take care of ill babies, has passed away at 89 years-old. The Newborn Center is now named for Dr. Korones where over 45,000 babies are born each year.

Dr. Korones worked at the Med for over four decades until retiring in 2009. In the first year the newborn center opened, mortality fell by 25 percent. Before Dr. Korones' passing, he sat alongside his wife and said he's intent on doing the right thing and "If someone said that about me I would send a message back: thank you."

Services for Dr. Sheldon Korones will be held on Friday, July 5th at Temple Israel at 3 o'clock.
Korones' daughter Susan told me today that her father did the right things by the city and for his family through the example he set for his children.
