MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The Memphis police officer who reportedly shot and killed a 33-year-old man last week has been identified as Officer Zachary Apel, 27.

According to MPD, Officer Apel fired his gun when Johnny Taylor began shooting at police.

Officers were sent to the scene after several 911 calls were made from neighbors reporting that a man with a gun was reloading and fighting with a neighbor outside.

When officers arrived, they say Taylor was crouched behind a vehicle, armed with a handgun. He refused to comply with the officers' verbal commands and when ordered to drop his weapon, he stood up and started shooting.

Officer Apel fired the shot that killed Taylor. Taylor was pronounced dead on the scene.

No officers were injured but Apel has been relieved of duty pending an investigation into the incident.
