MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - The man accused of firing the shot that hit a 13-year-old in a crowd of people during a Fourth of July celebration was arraigned in court Monday.
Tashun Jenkins, 18, was present at the arraignment via a video camera set up at the jail. He listened on a phone as the judge outlined his charges and said he could get three to 15 years in prison if found guilty of aggravated assault.
The shooting Jenkins is accused of happened on July 4 at Tom Lee Park. Police say he fired the gun near a crowd of people who gathered to watch the fireworks. A bullet hit a 13-year-old in the leg. The victim was rushed to the hospital in non-critical condition.
Officers say that Jenkins fled from the scene and had taken off his shirt by the time officers caught up with him.
"We're pretty shocked and you know, I wouldn't expect him to do nothing like that because he's quiet," said Jenkins' brother, Sam, who was also at the park watching the fireworks.
Sam says he does not believe that Tashun was the shooter, but was not standing near his brother when the shooting started.
"I really think he didn't do it I really want to find out what happened," he added.
As for the 13-year-old boy who was hit by gunfire, he has been released from the hospital.
