(WMC-TV) - First responders found a mother dead and her two children clinging to life after a car accident at a busy intersection in Benton County.

"It hurts me about those kids, what they going to think when they get to the hospital. They going to ask for their momma you know, and that's sad," said constable James Williams.

Two children lost their mother Erica Hendershot in the crash Monday. The young brother and sister are expected to recover. They were flown to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis.

"It was a lady and a man and they got the little kid out, and I got my blanket on their car and laid him on it," said Williams.

The intersection of U.S. Highway 72 and Mississippi Highway 7 can be dangerous. Omar Aljawfi can see everything from a window behind him at the nearby gas station.

"No lights, they need a red light or something there," said Aljawfi.

State Troopers say it appears Hendershot's SUV was hit after she tried to turn in front of another vehicle. Investigators said the elderly couple in the second car were taken to The MED with moderate injuries, but are expected to recover.
