Summer heat can wear on your vehicle's tires

(WMC-TV) - Summer can not only bring possible hazards to your body, but also to your vehicle. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates heat and hot roads have led to an estimated 11,000 crashes.

A tire gauge can be a useful tool to have during the summer months. The heat can cause your tires to expand, which could lead to a blowout or premature tire wear.

Barton's Car Care shared a few easy tips to make sure your tires are properly maintained.

A "penny test" can be done to make sure your tires have enough tread.

"Take Lincoln's head and stick it in the tire. If you can see Lincoln's head the tire is bad. It's worn out," said mechanic Jason Huffman.

While your down there, make sure your tires are wearing evenly. If not, they could need realigning. Look for tread-wear indicators like raised sections spaced throughout the bottom of the tread grooves. When those appear, it is time to replace your tires.

Also, check your tires' age. You do not want your tires to be older than six or seven years old.

Use your tire gauge to make sure your tire pressure matches that set by the manufacturer. If you do not know what that number is, check the sticker on your car door.
