Condemned house frustrates neighbors

(WMC-TV) - A Memphis house has been condemned, but a neighbor says nothing is being done about it.

The house on Plate burned in January of 2012. The letter on the door says the city condemned the property in September of 2012.

Now neighbors want to know why the house is still standing.

"Its sickening, just sickening," said neighbor Bill Bradford.

Bradford sent the Action News Five Investigators a photo of overgrown grass around the house. When Action News Five visited the house Thursday, we did notice the grass had been mowed.

But there is still old furniture in the carport. And inside, there is insulation all over the floors and the ceilings are wide open because of the fire.

Bradford says since the house burned, it has been a constant eyesore, and a danger, to the neighborhood.

"Its blighting our neighborhood, children play in the yard, the house is wide open and they can go inside anytime they want to go in," said Bradford.

Bradford spent over forty years in the fire restoration business and says it would cost more to repair the house than tear it down.

The letter on the front clearly says the house has been condemned by the City of Memphis.

Bill Bradford says he has even taken the case to environmental court and still has not seen results.

"They've acknowledged my complaint, but haven't boarded up anything. It's wide open here and in front," continues Bradford.

The listed owner of the house is Xavian McNeal.

Action News Five tried to call McNeal but his voice mail is full.

"I'm tired of looking at it. I'm sure its an investment for the man but he's letting it go to pot and I'm not gonna allow it to happen in my neighborhood," said Bradford.

Action News Five called city code enforcement to ask why something hasn't been done with the house since it was condemned. We haven't heard back.
