LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Thursday's rain in southern Nevada did more than help crews attacking the Carpenter 1 fire on Mt. Charleston.

The Clark County Department of Air Quality downgraded an alert issued Wednesday regarding unhealthy levels of smoke in the air.

Officials cited atmospheric moisture and a change in wind direction as factors in the downgrade of the alert to an advisory. The advisory is in effect through Sunday, the department said.

Despite the downgrade, officials still caution of airborne smoke and dust in the air from particulate matter, which aggravates those with respiratory diseases and breathing issues.

While the advisory is in effect, you should consider limiting strenuous outdoor activity , especially if you have a respiratory disease.

If you work outdoors, consider wearing a painter's mask or surgical mask. Also, keep your windows closed and run your air conditioner inside your house and car . It will filter out dust and particulates.

If you are suffering with itchy eyes, a runny nose or congestion, try over-the-counter or prescription allergy medication.

To reduce ground-level ozone, fill up your gas tank after sunset and plan your errands so they can be completed in one trip. Also, keep your car well maintained and consider using mass transit or carpooling.
