(RNN) - Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, has given birth to a son in what Britons are calling a "normal" birth, which means not by Cesarean section.

No name has been released yet, but the baby is being referred to as Baby Cambridge.

He was born at 4:24 local time, and weighs 8 pounds 6 ounces.

Great grandparents The Queen and Prince Philip are delighted at the news of the birth of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's baby, according to the British Monarchy's twitter page.

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall, Charles and Camilla, said in a statement on Monday evening:

"Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy.

"Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone's life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future."

The British Prime Minister David Cameron gave a brief statement to the media outside of 10 Downing Street, welcoming Baby Cambridge and saying the moment was an important one for the nation.

President Barack Obama issued a statement congratulating the couple on the "joyous occasion."

"Given the special relationship between us, the American people are pleased to join with the people of the United Kingdom as they celebrate the birth of the young prince," he said.

A town crier - harkening back to a time before Twitter and social media - rang a bell and yelled the announcement, ending with "God save the Queen!"

Duchess Kate, as she is popularly known, was admitted to St. Mary's Hospital in London early Monday morning after traveling by car from Kensington Palace.

The medical staff present during the royal birth included: Mr. Marcus Setchell, Surgeon-Gynaecologist, Mr. Guy Thorpe-Beeston, Obstetrician and Dr Sunit Godambe, Consultant Neonatologist.

According to royal protocol, the queen was informed of the birth before anyone else. The doctor signed a document on palace letterhead giving the time of birth and child's gender.

The bulletin was taken by an official to Buckingham Palace, where was posted on a golden colored wooden easel to inform the public. The easel was last used when William's birth was announced.

The only addition since the last royal birth is social media – the official Twitter and Facebook accounts of the monarchy have announced the news online.

Baby Cambridge was born in the private Lindo wing of St. Mary's Hospital in London where William was born 31 years ago. It also took 10 days for the palace to reveal Williams name.

He missed the unofficial due date of around July 11 to 13, although Buckingham Palace officials never officially gave specific due date.

Prince William and Catherine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, were married April 29, 2011.

The infant will be third in line for the throne, pushing Prince Harry to fourth.

Several dozen media outlets have been camped outside the doors of the hospital where the royal couple welcomed their child.

St. Mary's Hospital is where the late Princess Diana gave birth to both Prince William and Prince Harry.

CNN reported a silver penny will be given to anyone in Britain whose baby arrives on the same day the royal heir is born. It will come in a blue pouch for a boy.

To claim the silver coin, UK parents whose baby's birth coincides with that of the royal baby must register through the Royal Mint's Facebook page and upload a scanned copy of the birth certificate within 60 days. It is making 2,013 of the coins available.

The Royal Mint said the gesture reflects the tradition of marking a new birth with a gift of silver for good luck.

The royal couple announced they were expecting in December. The expecting parents chose not to know the sex of the baby.

This will be the third great-grandchild for Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen has eight grandchildren.

The Succession to the Crown Act 2013 was rewritten earlier this year so a girl can take the throne if they are the eldest sibling. In the past, the male heir always took precedence.
