Police need public's help to solve hit-and-run that killed 15-year-old boy

(WMC-TV) - Memphis police are asking for the public's help in solving a hit and run that killed a Memphis teenager.

"The older the case, the harder it is to solve," said Memphis Police Department Traffic Investigations major Tracy Gossett. "So with this being only a couple days old, we're hoping the public can help us with it."

Just before 11 p.m. Sunday night, police say 15-year-old Tyler Johnson was trying to cross the street at the intersection of Perkins Road and Mallory Avenue when an SUV swerved across three lanes of traffic and hit and killed him. The driver sped away from the scene.

"Because you will not have any peace or no rest until you turn yourself in for what you did to my nephew," Johnson's aunt, Monica Henderson, told Action News 5 on Monday night. "And you let him lay on the concrete, on the ground, like an animal ... That's what you did."

Investigators say they have a partial description of the car, but they need more information.

"It was a large gold SUV, dark-tinted windows with white lettering across the back window," Gossett said. "Probable damage to the front end, the hood, the grill. Because the indication we've got is that he was hit with the front portion of the vehicle. And I believe the driver of the vehicle would have known he hit something."

Something... or... someone. Tyler Johnson to be exact. A teen. A student. A football player.

"He had a lot of enthusiasm. Heart, spirit. He was a real go-getter, he was," said Johnson's football coach, Ben Thomas.

If you can help solve this case call Crime Stoppers at (901) 528-CASH or MPD traffic investigators at (901) 636-4640.
