Kids learn life lessons in the boxing ring

(WMC-TV) - Memphis police have been fighting for a lot lately, but Tuesday, they got the chance to fight with the future of our city -- with a little help from a professional.

Sometimes life's biggest lessons come from experience. And sometimes those experiences shape who we become. Take 12-year-old Symone for example. She is one of dozens of kids participating in the Memphis Police Department's "Outside the Box" summer boxing and mentoring program.

Symone is learning the basics of boxing with the help of a coach and mentor. But Tuesday, she received some instruction from an expert.

"Try to outreach to the kids and get them into an MMA program," said MMA fighter Andy Ulrich. "Talking about hard work and dedication, what it takes to train hard, stay in the gym."

Ulrich is not only teaching kids lessons inside the ring, but his advice will carry over into their everyday lives. They are lessons about life, his experience of falling into a rough lifestyle, and combating bullying. Important lessons that could help shape the kids' attitudes and perspectives.

"It's awesome," said Ulrich. "They're learning skills, just like the little guy out here learning combos. I wanna take some lessons from him."

He continued, "When you're their age, looking up to somebody and now you're that person that these kids look up to it's very gratifying."
