A 37-year-old Washington man was killed after crashing a stolen car during a police chase in Morrow County.

Oregon State Police said it happened early Thursday morning along Highway 207 near Pine City.

Investigators said the car was stolen at the Pilot Truck Stop in Stanfield while the driver was delivering newspapers. The driver left the car unlocked with the keys inside at about 4:15 a.m., according to police, as he dropped off USA Today newspapers.

A Stanfield police officer was called out to take a report. Shortly after arriving at the truck stop, the stolen car was spotted driving in the area. The officer got into his patrol car and attempted to stop the driver, but the suspect kept going.

At 4:45 a.m., as the stolen car kept heading south near milepost 16, the driver failed to negotiate a left downhill curve, traveled off the highway and fell down an embankment. It rolled several times and finally stopped in a dirt field about 100 feet from the roadway.

The driver was thrown from the car and pronounced dead at the scene. He has not yet been identified.
