Elderly woman rescued from burning home

(WMC-TV) - A woman in Midtown is in critical condition after being rescued from her burning home on Yale Avenue late Thursday night.

Neighbors tried to save the woman but storm doors and bars on the windows of her home prevented them from getting in.

"The down side of the house was blazing. The air conditioner was blazing so hard ... things started blowing up. Then she hollered 'Hey mister. You know me. Help me!' and I came to help her trying to tear the door down and we couldn't get nothing open," explained neighbor Tommy Jeffers.

The fire department arrived on the scene just before 11 p.m. They found the woman on the living floor near the front of the house. She is being treated for smoke inhalation at The MED.

The exact cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but investigators say it appears to be an electrical malfunction in the den area of the home.
