Volunteers build playground in one day

(WMC-TV) - The Orange Mound community came together Friday with one common goal: to build a neighborhood play ground in one day. The tight-knit group is hoping it will help to build a strong foundation for the future.

More than 200 volunteers showed up to help.

"We have all folks working on a common thing and that's to support children," said Nick Manning.

The new playground is going up at Hanley Elementary School.

Volunteers like Bragg Lampkin helped to lay a foundation for the play space. He and many others are joining forces with Aspire Schools and Lowe's Home Improvement.

They are working together to install a rock climbing wall that includes three slides, a tire swing, flower beds, a stage, and several benches.

Just a few feet away from the playground is a giant map of the United States.

The playground went up where there hasn't been one for quite some time ... but what is happening in Orange Mound is really laying a foundation for the future of the neighborhood.

"It's very important that you lay a foundation so the children have something sure footed to stand on," said Lampkin. "They can work from there to aspire to be anything they wanna be and be anything they wanna do."

"I know they're gonna have a great smile on their faces when they come back and I'm just happy to be a part of it," said Henry Doggrell, Jr.

The group held an official ribbon cutting for the playground Friday. It should be finished by the end of the day.

After that, Lowe's will install a fence.
