MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Memphis woman is sitting in jail, accused of siccing a pit bull on a little boy. But her neighbors say that does not sound like the woman they know, nor her dog.

Kathy Bennett is locked up at 201 Poplar on a $60,000 bond. Her neighbors still cannot believe it.

"Because as long as I've known the lady she's been nothing but nice," said Derrick Smith. "Sometimes when I don't have anything to eat, she offered to make food for me, wash my clothes, done a lot for me."

Bennett is charged with aggravated assault after police say she threatened a 9-year-old boy with her pit bull.

According to an affidavit of complaint, she gave the dog commands to attack him and he feared "imminent bodily harm" and "ran from the dog" until his grandmother stepped in.

Derrick Smith says he was not there when it happened, but that the accusations don't sound like his neighbor or her dog.

"It's a nice dog," he said. "I've known that pit bull personally and it's always been friendly with kids."

The little boy's mother told Action News 5's Nick Kenney that her son was not hurt and that he is currently staying with his father.
