(WMC-TV) - An upscale specialty grocery store has expressed interest in opening another store in Memphis and that has some people talking about a certain corner in Midtown.
There is speculation that Fresh Market is considering a vacant office building and hotel at the corner of Union Avenue and McLean Boulevard for a new location.
Midtown residents say they can use a specialty grocery store in the area.
"I have to go all the way to Whole Foods, because I'm a vegan. And I don't eat anything but produce and organic," said one Midtown resident. "So, I have to go all the way. I just got back driving about 30 minutes to Whole Foods."
"I'm also juicing now, so that would be a great place to just run real quick and get some fresh produce," agreed Vonda Perry.
The Greensboro, North Carolina-based grocer issued a statement saying, "Memphis is an area of interest for The Fresh Market, but we don't have any specific sites to announce at this time."
The Fresh Market already has locations on White Station Road in East Memphis and on Poplar Avenue in Germantown. A new store is only speculation for now, but Memphians are excited about the idea of welcoming the grocery store to Midtown.
"I think it'd be great. I think the market here would be wonderful for it, too, because people in Midtown are really concerned about eating right," said Stanley Kahn.
Tony Westmoreland, the listing agent on the buildings at Union Avenue and McLean Boulevard, says the building has been under contract since the end of last year, but he won't identify who has the contract on the property.
He says it's a large project, a big deal, and they're working on it.
