Study: TN has most distracted drivers in the country

(WMC-TV) - The state of Tennessee has some of the most distracted drivers in country. That is according to a new study from the National Safety Council.

The biggest issue, it says, is cell phones.

"In this digital age people are preoccupied with technology rather than keeping their eyes on the road and hands on the steering wheel," said David McGriff, Jr., Shelby County Sheriff's Office investigation unit.

According to the national study, both New York and California scored high on the number of cell phone-related crashes that resulted in fatalities, but Tennessee was off the charts.

The National Safety Council found that 10.6 percent of all deadly crashes in Tennessee involved the use of a cell phone. That's ten times the national average and well beyond states like New Jersey and Massachusetts.
