(WMC-TV) - As Memphis and Shelby County brace for the August 5th school merger, volunteers spent the day walking door-to-door to encourage parents about the start of school.
The volunteers included Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell and Carnes Elementary School principal Reneta C. Sanders.
"Hey, good morning. We're just here to remind you registration is Tuesday," stated Sanders.
Parents were shocked by this visit Saturday morning.
"Your principal can come to your door personally and tell you to get ready for school. Who does that? What principal do you know who does that and comes with the mayor? It's wonderful," exclaimed Tramaine Dickerson.
When asked why he decided to join the walk; the Shelby County Mayor made his reasoning known.
"Nothing's more important than helping these kids get off to a good start," declared Luttrell.
Luttrell hopes people will put past tensions behind them.
"Just be positive about the changes taking place. A lot has gone on in he last two years and it all leads up to this point," stated Luttrell.
School supplies, registration information, and health and safety tips were given away at Saturday's walk.
