Family asking for answers on anniversary of son's death

(WMC-TV) - The anniversary of 21-year-old Chavis Carter's death was full of dancing and singing.

Mother Teresa Rudd misses her son.

"It's been really hard and stressful; but, we're maintaining," stated Rudd.

Carter died following his arrest July 29, 2012 on an outstanding warrant during a traffic stop.

Carter's death was originally pronounced as a suicide. However, many question how he could have killed himself in the back seat of a police cruiser.

"We just really want to know what happened to him that night," said Rudd.

Attorneys for the family filed a federal lawsuit this past Friday.

"From the missing videotape to no prints on the gun, there's just a number of different things that have led to this lawsuit," explained attorney Ursula Holmes.

Police negligence is the primary concern in this lawsuit.
