(WMC-TV) - Just when Bass Pro thought it was safe to go back in the water, a new controversy over what some call a risqué image of a mermaid is surfacing. The mermaid logo for the upcoming Uncle Buck's Fishbowl and Grill is a too sexy for a family environment, according to some Memphians.
Earlier this year, Bass Pro toned down the colors on its upcoming building signs that will be affixed to the Pyramid Arena, after downtown residents complained they were too big and gaudy. The mermaid sign would be located on the north side of the Pyramid Area, away from the street.
"We really need to get something conducive to all families and all ages," said parent Phillip Boyd. "We've got young children here, and we really need something that is going to help bring more businesses to downtown."
The Memphis Area Women's Council also expressed concern over the nearly 10-foot sign, which shows a scantily clad mermaid with what appears to be small sea shells covering her bosom. The logo is in all of Uncle Buck's restaurants across the country.
"The Design Review Board does not have the authority to regulate the content of artwork," said Paul Morris, Downtown Memphis Commission. "That's going to be open later because it's going to draw a crowd at night to go bowling and enjoy this restaurant."
While some say the image is no different than Disney's Little Mermaid, Boyd says Uncle Buck's mermaid is no Ariel.
"It's going to draw the older crowd," he said,
But he looks forward to Bass Pro's arrival.
"I think it's great they're wanting to move into the pyramid and bring downtown back to the majesty it was 20 years ago," said Boyd.
Meanwhile, the board approved the signage for the face of the pyramid. Bass Pro says they will consider the Uncle Buck changes, but it is a registered trademark.
Bass Pro is scheduled to open July 2014.
