(WMC-TV) - The Memphis Police Department will not have to cut precincts this year, despite having to cuts millions from its budget.
MPD Director Toney Armstrong addressed the issue at a town hall meeting Wednesday night. Public safety was on the minds of many Whitehaven residents who filled Berean Baptist Church concerned their police precinct on East Raines would be closed.
"It is my job to come here tonight and tell you what I foresee coming," said Armstrong.
Armstrong warned the council when he talked about closing the precincts. Mayor A C Wharton said the city is working on leadership concerning the budget.
"We can understand the concern anytime people talk about safety ... We would much prefer people get excited ... rather than say it doesn't matter," said Wharton.
