City council to vote on sales tax hike proposal

(WMC-TV) - The Memphis City Council will vote Tuesday on a proposed five-cent sales tax hike to pay for pre-kindergarten.

While some say pre-k is critical to a strong education and to deter future at-risk behavior, others say the city with the state's highest sales tax cannot afford even higher taxes.

If the sales tax hike is approved, 4,500 additional children in Memphis will go to pre-k at a cost of $27 million.

Monday at 6 p.m., Action News 5's Kontji Anthony will uncover a new study on the impact of pre-k on students and bring you reaction from taxpayers.
