Bartlett High grad goes big in WNBA

(WMC-TV) - A Bartlett High School graduate is now in the WNBA and her team is projected to go quite the distance in the playoffs.

Jasmine James grew up in the Memphis area, playing in AAU leagues. She lived in Jonesboro and Shelby County before starring on the hardwood at Bartlett High School.

"It just takes a lot of work, a lot of determination and like I said, academics has to come first," said her mom, Janine James.

Janine and Greg James spoke with Action News 5 about their daughter, who went from Bartlett High to the University of Georgia, to being drafted by Seattle, and then, Phoenix.

"I think she is strongly rooted from a biblical standpoint," said Greg. "It's not the things you see once or twice a week. The talented ones are doing the things you see when the camera is not on."

He continued, "They're healthy and they have a really good chance of doing well in the west and also competing for a WNBA championship."

Jasmine is a local hoops star making it big while remembering her Memphis roots.

"When she comes home I have to do fried fish, fried catfish, the spaghetti the whole works," said Janine. "I have to do that as her first meal when she comes home."

Jasmine James can be seen playing for Phoenix Tuesday night on ESPN2.
