Students celebrate first day back to school in Tipton County

(WMC-TV) - It was the first day back at school for the 12,000 plus students in the Tipton County school system.

Students have the day off Tuesday and come back for their first full day on Wednesday.

Fourth grader John Owen Hensley is just one of thousands of students who got up early on the first day back to school in Tipton County.

"I wondered what kids would be in my class ... Some kids I don't know ... I could make friends with," Hensley says.

Hensley and his fellow classmates say today was a good day.

"I get to free draw and do a word search for some of my friends," added Hensley.

For Atoka principal Dr. Rebekah Byrd, this first day has been in the planning stage since May.

"Busy but successful. All of the students were happy to be back and the parents were happy to have them back," said Dr. Byrd.

Atoka is Tipton County's newest school.

Built six years ago, its also the only school getting an addition this year.

"We're adding six classrooms here. We're adding a safe room. We got a FEMA grant and that construction is going on now," adds Dr. Bibb.

Dr. Bibb says he has seen an increase in student enrollment this year.

He says this increase is more than likely the result of the school consolidation in Shelby County.

Teachers and administrators in Tipton County will have in-service day on Tuesday to tabulate the final enrollment numbers here in Tipton County.
