(WMC-TV) - Neighbors living near the Ripley Healthcare and Rehab center say they were shocked to hear that Ripley resident Bernard Taliaferro was arrested and charged with raping an Alzheimer's patient inside her room there.

"It was very disturbing, extremely. I've never known of any disturbance call where police have been called over there," said neighbor Darleen Autrey.

Autrey has lived next door for years and says she has heard nothing but good things about the nursing home and rehab facility.

"I know its state of the art now because a couple of years ago it got completely ruined because of the flood," adds Autrey.

A warrant says the rape allegedly happened last Tuesday afternoon.

One witness stated she went to check on the victim, who suffers from Alzheimer's.

When she walked in the room, she said she saw Taliaferro having sex with the victim.

She then walked outside and notified two other staff members.

One staff member told Taliaferro to get off the victim.

Taliaferro apologized to the other staff member, saying quote " I'm sorry ... I know I was wrong."

No one answered at Taliaferro's home on Spring Street.

Meanwhile, Darleen Autrey says this incident leaves her with more questions than answers.

"Do they have cameras in place or security in the common areas or anything like that?" asks Autrey.

Action News Five left a message for the administrator at Ripley Healthcare and Rehab but we have not heard back.

Bernard Taliaferro is due back here in court on September 6.
