Special meetings underway for municipal school boards

(WMC-TV) - Just as the new school year was kicking off across Shelby County officials in Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, Lakeland and Millington are up for the start of municipal school districts.

Special call meetings are underway in Bartlett and Germantown for the first readings of the ordinance that will allow these municipalities to elect their school board.

All five municipalities are working against the clock to have final readings done before the August 23 deadline for the November 7 election.

Bartlett Mayor says he has five opportunities for new board members, and any qualified person can submit their names.

"So August 24th we go down to election commission and file everything, and then the people who would like to be candidates can pick up their petitions ... And get at least 26 Bartlett voters so their names can appear on the ballot," said McDonald.

These special meetings are open to the public.

Mayor McDonald is urging parents to get involved in this process so they will know the people who are making decisions regarding their children's education.
