Homeowner fires shots at home invasion suspects

(WMC-TV) - Shelby County deputies are searching for two men who reportedly tried to break into a home near Raleigh Tuesday morning.

Investigators say the suspects rang the doorbell of a home on Bending Oaks Cove. When nobody answered, they went to a back window and tried to force their way into the home after damaging the utility meter to shut off power.

"The homeowner in question heard the noise and grabbed his shotgun and came outside," said Chip Washington, Shelby County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies say the homeowner fired several shots in the direction of the two suspects, who took off running when they realized someone was home.

Deputies brought in K-9s to assist in the search for the two suspects.

Neighbors were shocked when they discovered their street had become a crime scene overnight.

"Always been a calm, quiet community and to know that this kind of behavior is going on is quite disturbing," said Earnest Hatton, who lives nearby.

Deputies say it not clear yet whether either of the suspects were hit by gunfire. They are monitoring area hospitals to see if anyone shows up with a gunshot wound.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office spokesman says the homeowner does have a right to protect his property and he will not be charged for firing his weapon.
