Millington residents, leaders react to ousting of city manager

(WMC-TV) - During Monday night's meeting of the Millington City Board, the aldermen decided to oust recently-hired city manager Thomas Christie. It was a 4-3 vote, with Mayor Terry Jones breaking the tie.

Now that Christie is out, what will happen next? And who will run the city?

It has not even been 24 hours since Christie was let go by the city board.

Charles Reed makes it to most every Millington City Board meeting, but he said Monday night's meeting was much different than most.

"Oh yeah, it was very tense," he said about the meeting that lasted several hours. "I think there were some pretty high expectations for Mr. Christie but unfortunately it just didn't work."

Hired back in January as Millington's first city manager, Christie recently took flack from board members for his recommendation to cut 19 positions from city government. Thirteen of those cuts were made in the form of layoffs; six positions were unfilled.

Leaders say the city's finance director and part time Mayor Terry Jones are running city hall in the city manager's absence.

Vice Mayor Chris Ford says Christie never had a good working relationship with city board members.

"He lived in a hotel. My point being is that it will work if we find the right person," said Reed.

Charles Reed says he will continue to support his city. He is optimistic that the right city manger will come along.

"They have to have a vested interest in our community and they have to be able to work with us," he added.

Action News 5 reached out to Thomas Christie to get his thoughts on Monday night's meeting. He did not respond to requests for comment.

The city board will hold a special meeting Monday night where they are likely to appoint an interim city manager.
