Two MPD officers on leave pending investigation

(WMC-TV) - Two Memphis police officers are off the job as the department conducts an administrative investigation into their actions overnight Tuesday into Wednesday morning.

A source tells Action News 5 the pair was caught taking items from a vehicle in the parking lot of a car dealership on Covington Pike. The officers were not arrested, but a Memphis Police Department spokesperson says they have been relieved of duty due to an administrative investigation.

The Memphis Police Association says the officers did not do anything to warrant criminal charges because the officers did not burglarize a facility and the vehicle in question belonged to one of the officers. The union says MPD likely put the officers on paid leave as internal affairs investigators try to determine why the officers waited until the dealership was closed for business to retrieve the tires from the vehicle.

The Memphis Police Department did not release the names of the officers involved. A spokesperson says MPD will release more details if and when the department learns more.

Action News 5's Nick Kenney is working to find out more and will have the latest in a live report at 5 p.m.
