DeSoto Co. overcrowding may eventually be a 'bit of an issue'

(WMC-TV) - Thursday is the first day back to school for students attending DeSoto County Schools.

The student population is growing every year and DeSoto County Schools Superintendent Milton Kuykendall made it clear just how creative they have gotten to avoid overcrowding.

"We're in decent (shape) with our schools... just two or three schools have a little bit of an issue. But, in most of our schools, a little space (was set aside and) planned for this when we built schools," stated Kuykendall.

DeSoto County has built 16 schools in just the last 10 years and, while most of the schools have adequate space for the students, two or three schools may experience issues.

To make room, DeSoto County is adding classrooms to elementary schools in Hernando and Southaven. There are not any plans presently to re-zone.
