AR district working to allow teachers to carry guns

(WMC-TV) - One Arkansas district is moving forward with plans to allow teachers to carry concealed guns... even though the Attorney General is against it.

Superintendent of the Clarksville Schools David Hopkins made it clear the school is pushing to have licensed faculty and staff armed during the school day.

"It's a no brainer. It should be done. When we get that in place and we put our security signs up, as a parent myself, I'm gonna feel much better about the security of our buildings," stated Hopkins.

The decision to move forward with the security program comes just days after Attorney General Dustin McDaniel issued an opinion...which stated Arkansas law allows private businesses to provide armed security; but, it does not extend to schools.

Now, the plan depends upon a state board issuing licenses. The school district is still waiting for licenses for about a third of its teachers and staff who have had weapons training. Until then, the school district says the plan is on hold.
