Three girls go above and beyond to help St. Jude kids

(WMC-TV) - Two sisters are taking it upon themselves to help a local hospital that helps other children.

Maddie and Sami Kirkpatrick teamed up for "Christmas in August" to benefit the kids at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Coloring books and crayons have brought the two sisters closer together with one goal in mind.

"Because the kids need something to play with in the hospital," said Sami. "They don't want to lay around in the hospital all day."

The Bollinger County sisters started their project by donating their own supplies but, it turned in to a much bigger effort in just three weeks.

"They just get so excited when they are helping someone out. It makes me proud that I know they want to do something just for other people and not themselves," said the girls' mother, Jessica Kirkpatrick.

In Jonesboro, Arkansas, another girl is doing her part to help the kids at St. Jude.

Gracie Redwine, 10, donated all of her savings to the hospital.

"I feel sorry for them and they are going through a rough time," she said.

It took Gracie and her grandmother, Shirley, several years of penny pitching until they finally reached a grand total of $158.22.

Shirley believes Gracie empathizes with the patients and their families because she understands loss. She lost her own father just two days after her eighth birthday.

Gracie decided to give to St. Jude after seeing a survivor's story on the internet.

"It makes me feel real proud of her to know that she wants to do that," said Shirley.
