DeSoto County students go back to school

(WMC-TV) - It is the day many parents and students look forward to -- the first day of school.

Kids in DeSoto County made their way back to the classroom Thursday.

Parent after parent pulled up to Horn Lake Elementary School Thursday dropping of excited children ready to see friends and meet their new teachers.

"She's excited to be back at school. She's happy to be back with her friends and she's been looking forward to it," said Susan English, whose said her daughter's first morning back to school went smoothly with no issues.

Traffic was under control as crossing guards and police officers moved traffic in and out of the drop off line.

Dorrelle Wilkins says her daughter had mixed emotions about going back.

"Kinda nervous and excited. Nervous and excited but really nervous," said Wilkins.

DeSoto County Schools have experienced extreme growth in the last 10 years.

The district has built 16 schools in that time and Superintendent Milton Kuykendall tells Action News 5 they have been built to accommodate an even larger student body.

While most Mid-South schools are back in session, kids in West Memphis and Marion, Arkansas have a little more time before they have to hit the books. School starts in West Memphis and Marion on August 19.
