(WMC-TV) - One person is dead after he was ejected from a pickup truck, thrown into a ditch, and then pinned by his own truck on Interstate 40 eastbound at Covington Pike, according to officials.

Memphis police were on the scene investigating the accident for hours Thursday.

A witness said there were a few cars behind 27-year-old Thomas Kee when his Chevy Avalanche went off the road into a ditch. The witness and other drivers stopped to help, but they were too late.

The accident ejected the Kee from the vehicle. Then the truck landed on top of him in a ditch, according to witnesses.

"This sad real sad. He's already been through a lot," said a co-worker of the victim, Ronald Currence. "He's lost a lot of his close friends through death, and now here he is looking in the face of death himself."

Memphis police said initially this was a two-vehicle accident involving a tractor-trailer, but that preliminarily information was incorrect.
