(WMC-TV) - As the United States has a serious need for more students to go into mathematics and science-based programs at school, Lemoyne-Owen College department heads are working to make sure that happens.

The Memphis college won a competitive $1 million federal grant. Now they are kicking off an ambitious program called "Moving Forward: Steps to Graduate School". The goal is to get more students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and then make sure they continue with graduate school.

"Sometimes students don't recognize their potential," said Lemoyne Owen College Vice President and Chief Academic Officer Cheryl Golden. "Many times students shy away from mathematics thinking they don't have a good grasp of it, or thinking they aren't as strong as they need to be for certain disciplines."

Many professionals believe they can change that with the $1.7 million in financial help.

"This project will provide us the resources to mentor students all the way from admission level, to acceptance to a graduate program," said Chair of the Division of Natural & Mathematical Sciences Dr. Delphia Harris.

Congressman Steve Cohen was on hand for the announcement Friday and knows all to well the gains U.S. students need to make in STEM fields.

"It's a big issue for the economy everything is going to high tech," said Cohen. "We need individuals who know how to participate, understand, and produce. Those are the people who make jobs in this economy."

Students will be able to utilize perks from this grant as soon as classes start in a few weeks.
