Mid-Southerns look to stay cool in the hot weather

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - The summer of 2013 has been mild, compared to Mid-South summers of the past, but that does not make it any easier to handle when temperatures do get uncomfortably hot.

People are looking for ways to stay cool. Families are at the Children's Museum of Memphis, while others are just seeking out shady spots.

For those who need help, the Hospitality Hub in downtown Memphis gives temporary relief until 1:30 p.m.

Joe Isriggs found both water and shade Friday. He was selling the The Bridge Paper on Main Street, earning money to stay out of the heat.

"That's what the purpose of this is, so you can sell them, so you can afford the $6 so you can pay to be in a shelter and have a place to shower and get out of the heat," said Isriggs.

People continue to take in the last few days of summer, knowing that a cool down will come soon enough.

Here are a few helpful reminders to stay safe in the summer heat:

  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol
  • Wear light and loose fitting clothing
  • Limit outdoor activity in the middle of the day
  • Do not leave anyone in the car
