Interstate construction concerns drivers

(WMC-TV) - Driving on the interstate in Memphis can be risky at any time of the day or night, but now that there is repaving work along the south leg of the interstate – when you change lanes, and you hit that bump then you could hit another car.

Drivers along I-240 between Perkins and I-55 say you better watch out.

"Its no excuses ... Saying I almost had an accident," said driver Percy Jones.

TDOT crews are repaving the east and west bound lanes along I-240.

"Now it's like four lanes paved, and only one in between that's not paved, so it throws you off ... it's like whoa," said driver Keona Merriweather.

TDOT says in all, 6.6 miles of I-240 between Perkins and I-55 is being repaved.

"Its pretty dangerous, especially on the expressway," said Merriweather.

The project includes of lanes of travel, as well as on and off ramps and eleven foot shoulders.

"Two hands, you know the pavement is about to change ... Drive, stop guiding," advises driver Percy Jones.

TDOT says the repaving work is taking place during the overnight hours to cause the least distraction, but you still need to be careful.

The biggest thing, they say, keep your eyes on the road, don't text and drive, and keep your speed under the speed limit.

Weather permitting, TDOT hopes to have the repaving completed by August, 31.
