State to soon decide on new area code for Middle TN

One of Middle Tennessee's area codes is starting to get so crowded, it could soon mean changes for all of us.

Nashville and a dozen surrounding counties use area code 615, while other sections of Middle Tennessee use area code 931.

But state regulators say 615 will run out of available seven-digit phone numbers by the middle of 2015.

"It's not just your cell phone. It's not just your home phone. When people have, say, electric or gas meters that are read electronically, there's a telephone number assigned to that," said David Foster, with the Tennessee Regulatory Authority. "It's a lot of different uses that require telephone numbers that speed up the exhaustion than it did years ago."

Officials have proposed two solutions: one would split off a chunk of the area - likely Davidson County - to keep the 615 area code while assigning a new area code to the surrounding counties. Calling either area would require 10-digit dialing.

The other option would simply add in the new area code to new numbers when 615 runs out.

The Tennessee Regulatory Authority will decide what to do later this month, and it wants to hear from you first.

So far, about 3,000 people have completed the state's survey, with about 80 percent supporting the overlay idea - the one with 10-digit dialing for everyone.
