MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) - A 16-year-old accused of raping a fellow student at East High School was arrested Thursday. A juvenile court judge upgraded the charges from rape to aggravated rape based, in part, on the alleged victim's mental capacity.
Shelby County sheriff's deputies responded to the school on Wednesday in regards to a forcible rape, according to officials.
An 18-year-old female student was taken to The MED, complaining of abdominal pain. The 18-year-old special education student told staff members she was assaulted in a stairwell.
The victim identified the person who raped her as a 16-year-old male.
"When you hear something like this it is alarming, and it is difficult to hear," said the Shelby County public information officer, Chip Washington.
After being questioned the teen was taken to the Criminal Justice Center and charged with rape.
According to the Shelby County Sheriff's Office spokesman, the alleged rape did occur on school grounds.
Thursday afternoon, Shelby County Schools released the following statement:
An allegation of criminal assault was reported yesterday to East High School's administration shortly after school was dismissed. The Shelby County Sheriffs' Office was contacted, and officers were immediately dispatched. We take all allegations and reports very seriously. Criminal activity of any kind will not be tolerated on our campuses. The student involved in this incident has been arrested and will be strictly disciplined in accordance with Shelby County Schools' board policy.
Mario Jones mentors students at East High and says many of them were talking about the incident. Many not fully grasping how serious it should be taken.
"It could be your sister you mom your aunt, someone like that and this would be totally different," he said.
Parent Yvonne Coburn says she once volunteered at her son's school.
"I think security should be beefed up and there needs to be more parent patrols over there, you know what I'm saying? said Coburn. "We checked the bathrooms, stairwells, and stuff like that ... And I think more of that should go on."
The 16-year-old suspect was denied bond during Thursday's hearing. He will remain locked up at Juvenile Court.
