2-year-old girl killed when hit by pickup truck

(WMC-TV) - A 2-year-old girl is dead after being hit by a pickup truck in rural Tipton County Saturday evening.

According to police, a driver heading northbound on Charleston Mason Road hit the little girl when she walked into the street. The posted speed limit on the road is 45 miles per hour.

The child has been identified as Cathlena Hinnard, of Stanton, TN. She was just days away from celebrating her third birthday, but instead, her parents are planning her funeral.

Cathlena's mother says she was outside in the front yard with her children when a baby inside the house needed her attention. She went inside, and before she knew it, she heard someone slamming on the brakes in front of her house.

The toddler's father did not want to appear on camera, but said he spent most of Sunday flagging down traffic on Charleston Mason Road, trying to slow them down.

"It's just a tragedy, the whole situation," said Chief Donna Turner, Tipton County Sheriff's Office.

Tennessee Highway Patrol says neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the crash.

"We certainly have routine calls where children have wandered out into the roadway or go next door and they sure scare us to death," said Chief Turner.

Chief Turner says this tragedy should serve as a warning to all parents, regardless of how careful they try to be.

"You can turn your head and in a moment, children can get hurt, injured, they can get into the roadway," she said. "It takes ownership in the driving public to slow down, be aware of what's going on and even being as careful as you can be, accidents will happen."

The sheriff's office is still working to figure out how Cathlena was able to wander into the road. Right now, Chief Turner does not expect charges to be filed against the little girl's parents.

It is not known yet whether charges will be filed against the driver.
