Long awaited Wolf River Boulevard opens

(WMC-TV) - Hundreds of Mid-Southerners now have a new way of getting home now that the last leg of Wolf River Boulevard is open.

Germantown leaders announced the official opening of the roadway Tuesday.

The two mile stretch will provide an alternative route to using Poplar Avenue for drivers in the eastern suburbs.

Construction was started on the project in March 2011.

Organizers say 80 percent of the cost of the extension was covered by federal funds. Germantown taxpayers foot the rest of the bill.

"I think it's gonna be safe," said Richard Epps, who lives near Wolf River Boulevard. "It certainly is gonna be highly used because it basically cuts off the way people use to have to go cuts off about a mile or two and a lot of red lights."

"I think it's going to be fantastic getting off Poplar, taking traffic off Poplar," agreed Ron McCarty. "I just believe it's going to be an asset to all the communities and even the safety factor re-routing some traffic."

According to city officials, about 18,000 to 24,000 drivers will use the new road each day.
