MY TURN: Untested rape kits

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - I want to use my time this week to praise Meaghan Ybos for her courage and leadership as she shared her story publicly this week.

Ybos was raped at knifepoint when she was a teenager a decade ago. In a sense, she was violated again by the criminal justice system when her rape kit – the DNA evidence collected after the assault – was not even tested for nine years while attacker roamed free and committed other rapes.

Sadly, Ybos' case is not an isolated one.

As we learned this week, it's really the norm in Shelby County and in other communities across the country. Thanks to Ybos and others that is now finally changing.

In Shelby County, more than 10,000 of these kits may be untested. Keep in mind that's after the rape victims, came forward and went through an hours-long process to help law enforcement officials collect the evidence. As Ybos most poignantly told Action News 5 the real issue is our social attitude toward the crime of rape. It's hard to believe that we have been so insensitive.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email or call 800-465-1210.
